Our day begins early,
around 7:30 a.m., when the trip begins from the principal hotels of San
José and continues to the rural town of La Guácima, home to The
Butterfly Farm and an ideal location for rearing butterflies. In a
garden that is filled with over a thousand live butterflies, experienced
guides explain the life cycle, the natural history of these insects and
the farm's operations, answering the inevitable question, "Who buys
butterflies?"
The tour includes a
welcome cup of coffee, an introductory film about The Butterfly Farm and
the natural history of butterflies, a guided walk through
The Butterfly Garden, a visit to the
laboratory where the larvae are reared to pupation and an explanation of
the export process. One's visit is culminated by a visit to The Costa
Rica Corner™ gift shop.
Once the tour at The
Butterfly Farm is concluded at 11:00 a.m., the trip continues to
Orchid's Farm , taking the Inter-American highway to the hot climate of
Miramar at about 12:45 p.m. where a delicious lunch will be waiting.
At 1:30 p.m. we will
begin to immerse ourselves in the world of orchids in Orchid's Farm
where we will learn much about these beautiful flowers.
During the walk through
the farm we will learn about the history of orchids, the hybridization
and propagation of these in Thailand before arriving in Costa Rica, as
well as their natural reproduction and polinization, quality control and
packing. We will visit the extensive orchid collection of native Costa
Rican species and hybrids.
The tour in Orchimex will
be concluded with a sampling of local fruit of the season, and a visit
to the souvenir store. We will begin the return trip to the Central
Valley at 3:00 p.m., in time to leave each visitor in their respective
hotel by around 5:00 p.m.
