Villablanca was conceived as a nature
conservation project, therefore, the people who visit
must enjoy the power of nature.
People
who have an interest in nature and the conservation
process will have the opportunity to turn their visit
into an educational experience.
If you are coming to Costa Rica for
relaxation, Villablanca is the right place: 8% of the
world's hummingbirds are represented in Villablanca.
As an added benefit, Villablanca
provides a unique look into Costa Rican society and
history.
Our experience is that people of all
ages truly enjoy Villablanca. Presently, we receive
senior citizen groups,
families with small children, couples
honeymooning or scientists.
Rather than coldly defining the ideal
visitor through an age/income bracket, we like to define
them by lifestyle:
- Enjoys an active life .
- Are looking to complement their
vacation with an educational experience.
- Are sensitive to the environment
and support the idea of conservation .
- Want their children to experience
a very different vacation .
The
Los Angeles Cloud Forest is a rare and sometimes
unexpected sight for tourists coming to Costa Rica. To
visitors used to the promotional images of the rain
forest, the cloud forest seems a mystical being, an
alien presence shrouded in a cloud of mystery.
But once you penetrate the clouds, the
mystery is over and the excitement begins. The air
currents from the Northern plains, the Pacific and the
Atlantic fuse over Villablanca creating the climatic
conditions for a forest that technically should not be
there because of its low altitude.
Los Angeles features a comprehensive
network of trails classified by length and degree of
difficulty, where our expert guides have identified
dozens of medicinal plants and hundreds of bird species.
Through Villablanca's research station, this private
biological reserve has contributed to the education of
thousands of students from around the world.

Tours Available
Canopy Adventure above the
trees of the Los Angeles
Cloud Forest
Tour time: 3.0 hours
Bring: loose clothing to
allow for maximum flexibility,
binoculars
We provide: all necessary
equipment
Price: $ 40.00
This
tour is highly recommended for
people who seek adventure under
the supervision of expert
guides. The average height above
the ground is 70 feet, although
the tree canopy decreases the
feeling of height.
We reach the first tree platform
by way of a 32 feet high ladder.
From there, we move on to six
other platforms on five
different trees, thus allowing
us to view the cloud forest in
all its splendor.
The first track is the longest
one, 336 feet; the second one is
214 feet, the third one is 195
feet and the last one is 115
feet.
The
descent to the ground is done by
rope, so you can be sure that we
keep the excitement level up
until the last second.
The tour starts with an
explanation of the basic
principles needed to make this a
safe and enjoyable experience.
The guides, apart from their
training in climbing and
equipment usage, are very well
trained in biology and
conservation, therefore, their
talk always contains an
interesting array of information
about the nature of our cloud
forest and its relevance as a
private reserve.
Hike
in The Los Angeles Cloud Forest
Private Biological Reserve
Tour time: 3.0 hours
Bring: comfortable shoes
with good traction and
binoculars.
We provide: walking stick
and rain gear
Price: $ 30.00
This tour is designed for the
general public with a basic
interest in nature, in medicinal
plants, on our bird population
and the nature of our forest.
Here you will be able to visit
our Hummingbird Gallery where 27
species of hummingbirds can be
seen (8% of the world's
hummingbird species).
We start the hike with our
bilingual naturalist guide. The
guides, besides their training
in Biology and conservation, are
originally from and live in the
San Ramón/Los Angeles area so
their talk is full of
interesting details about the
idiosyncrasy and history of the
region.
There is great emphasis in the
objective of the forest, its
ecology and conservation. We
point out the differences and
similarities between the Cloud
Forest and the Rain Forest, we
present our flora and fauna, and
we take you to our Biological
Station.
Horseback
Ride in the Villablanca Farm and
The Los Angeles Cloud Forest
Private Biological Reserve
Tour time: 2.0 hours
Bring: preferably long,
light pants, binoculars.
We provide: rain gear.
Price: $ 30.00
This tour is designed for
the general public with a
basic interest in soft
adventure, nature and
agriculture. It is important
to point out that this is
not an easy ride that takes
place on flat land; there
are sections where you will
ride on uneven terrain and
there is plenty of mud.
However, no previous
horseback riding experience
is necessary since the
horses are very tame. A
cowboy from the ranch always
accompanies the group.
There is great emphasis to show
you the secondary cloud forest,
the coffee plantations and the
farm. We show you the Normand
cattle breed, imported directly
from France and being introduced
into Costa Rica by the Carazo
family.
The ride is exciting and
interesting at the same time
because, apart from showing
a leading, working farm, it
also allows you to enjoy the
beauty of the region; very
different from what you
normally expect to see in
Costa Rica.
Attraction
"La
Mariana" is
a unique chapel, the
only one in America
whose ceiling is covered
with hand
painted tiles
representing the
devotion to the Virgin
Mary in all
Latin-American
countries, surrounded by
our beautiful
continent’s costumes,
culture, flora and
fauna.
The chapel’s
ceiling is covered with 840
ceramic plates, all of them hand
drawn and painted with high
temperature enamel. Each side of
the ceiling has 15 panels of 28
plates divided in two vertical
rows of 14 plates. Each one of
the columns formed by the 14
plates develops a theme allusive
to a Latin-American virgin and
her country.
The first four
rows, two to the left and two to
the right, express the
celebration of San Ramón’s
festivities. Here we can observe
the representation of the
neighboring saint’s procession,
who come to pay their respect
and honor to their boss, Ramon,
on the 30 Th. of August of every
year.
The Virgins we
have chosen to honor in this
chapel are:
-
Our Lady of the
Rescue of Ujarrás
Costa Rica
-
Our Lady of Los
Angeles
Costa Rica
-
The Virgin of
Guadalupe
México
-
Our Lady of Suyapa
Honduras
-
La Concha,
Immaculate
Conception
Nicaragua
-
Our Lady of the
Caridad del Cobre
Cuba
-
Our Lady of
Providence
Puerto Rico
-
Our Lady of
Altagracia
Dominican Republic
-
Our Lady do
Aparecida
Brazil
-
Our Lady of
Chinquinquirá
Colombia
-
Our Lady of Coromoto
Venezuela
-
Our Lady of the
Thirty Three
Uruguay
-
Our Lady of Luján
Argentina
-
Our Lady of Peace
Costa Rica
Guarding the
chapel’s entrance we find San
Martín de Porras, greeting all
those who visit. San Martín is a
Latin-American saint from Lima,
Peru who represents a racial
cohesion in the American
continent.
Overlooking
the back window, a beautiful
verse of the "Misa Tica", can be
observed, a mass composed
according to Costa Rican
traditions by Aura Trejos and
Dionisio Cabal of "Cantares" (a
national group).
One of the
sides of the altar shows the
National Anthem of Costa Rica.
Like in every church, in our
chapel the national flag and
arms, symbols of respect for the
country, are also present, along
with a representation of a
manuscript written by the
anthem’s author, José María
Zeledón´s, handwriting, who is
also Estrella Zeledón de
Carazo´s grandfather.
Just over an hour from the city
of San Jose, the hotel is
conveniently located half way
between the capital and the San
Carlos-Arenal Volcano region.
To get there, just take the Pan
American Highway North. About a
45 minutes ride on the highway,
and right after the town of
Palmares, you will reach the San
Ramon exit. Take it and follow
the road across town until you
can not go any further.
Make a left and then make an
immediate right (at the
corner of the Hospital).
Follow that road for about
2,000 feet (700 meters)
until you reach a church. At
the church, make a left. You
will start to go up and down
hilly territory. From then
on, the road is clearly
marked with Villablanca
signs.
